This handbook was developed in collaboration with Building 4.0 CRC and provides guidance on how to use prefabricated, modular and associated Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) technologies safely, sustainably and in compliance with the National Construction Code (NCC).
Building Ministers asked us to work with industry to find ways to facilitate increased use of prefabricated and modular construction to help support and increase the supply of new housing.
This handbook helps increase the understanding and effectiveness of existing building standards and regulations, and to respond to government and industry requests for guidance on achieving NCC compliance in buildings that use MMC.
The handbook covers:
- MMC, systems, and products
- How to determine the evidence needed to comply with the NCC
- Factors influencing compliance outcomes when using MMC
There are a wide range of modular and prefabricated systems that can improve the productivity of all forms of construction. Some examples shown in the handbook include panelised wall systems, through to volumetric units like bathroom pods. The handbook recognises that every additional use of offsite manufacturing helps improve construction productivity and helps meet the national targets for increased housing supply.
The handbook refers to our Evidence of suitability and Performance solution process handbooks. You can find out more about prefabricated, modular and offsite construction on our dedicated initiatives page.
