Performance Solutions, or PSs as we often call them, encourage innovative design and technology use and offer a flexible way of achieving compliance. No one is more convinced of this than our Subject Matter Expert (SME) Network, established in March this year.
The Network, comprising some of Australia’s leading practitioners, engineers and thought leaders, was formed to highlight opportunities for applying performance-based design and to support practitioners in the use of PS.
For Evan Logan, the decision to join the Network was an easy one: ‘I saw benefit in trying to educate our clients on the benefits of PS and through the SME Network I was hoping to further that to a larger audience. Designers want to design, they don’t want to be held up by prescriptive measures, and PS allows you to do that…design.’
Similarly, David Graham's belief that we are not yet benefiting from the full power of PS drew him to the Network: ‘Performance-based design is a very effective way to design buildings – in those multi-disciplinary projects is where the real power is. It’s been around a long time in some respects but it’s not understood well and it’s up to us to try and make that message more prominent.’
Something all of our SMEs agree with, is that starting with a PS, rather than using it as a way to fix non-compliance, will save time and money in the long run and lead to better outcomes and client satisfaction. This was echoed by SME, Sid Thoo, when talking about his involvement in the Network: ‘I believe there are many ways to achieve more sustainable buildings, and I saw this group as one way I could help share this knowledge with others. The more people who know about PS the better outcomes we’ll have.’
Making PS more accessible
Case studies are regularly cited as a very useful resource in helping industry and practitioners better understand performance-based design and PS – and our SMEs have been instrumental in supporting the ABCB to make more case studies available. Keep an eye out for new case studies over the coming months.
We are also very grateful for the time and energy our SMEs have put into presenting on their different areas of expertise at various conferences and events and publishing articles – all on a voluntary basis.
Our SMEs are here to help
You may have heard about the Network or seen one of the SMEs present at a conference, but did you know the SME Network can provide advice and support on best practice application of PS?
Through the ABCB contact us page you can submit questions about the application of a PS, which will be considered and answered by the most appropriate person (or people if required). Make sure you select the NCC clarification option in the enquiry category and make reference to an SME network expert in your text.
You can also keep up to date with what the network is up to through our LinkedIn Performance showcase.
