Protection from Threats and Natural Disasters

Project output - assessment of building code arising from the protection of critical infrastructure and iconic structures initiatives.

The ABCB Office is monitoring initiatives to improve the protection of critical infrastructure and iconic structures against threats such as terrorism.  Any proposals for the BCA to play a role will be subjected to analysis using the COAG principles for regulatory action including analysis of costs and benefits.

The work on protection from natural disasters is a response to a report to COAG that recognised the role of the BCA in natural hazard mitigation by prescribing construction requirements. The report to COAG made recommendations that priority be given to reviewing the code and standards in respect of mitigating the effects of natural hazards.  This work is ongoing, in conjunction with several other organisations including Emergency Management Australia and Standards Australia.
