Feedback and Engagements
The 2017 Fire Sector Summit took place on 11th October at the Aviva Headquarters in the City of London. It featured expert speakers from across the industry, including our own Dr Brian Ashe, Director, ABCB.
Over 150 delegates attended, covering a huge variety of industry personnel wishing to be informed about, or influence and implement, fire policy.
The conference program provided a mix of plenary and workshop sessions. The plenary sessions featured current topics such as cladding and high rise; construction industry standards; and fire and the environment. Conference streams focused on the most current topics being discussed in the sector, including heritage, fire and rescue service interest and social housing.
Brian presented at the plenary session on Australian developments for fire safety in high-rise buildings. Brian also participated in a panel discussion and Q&A session on related matters. During the event, the tragic fire at Grenfell tower, West London was on the minds of all participants.
The sense at the summit was best captured by broadcaster and fire safety campaigner Nick Ross. During his speech at the welcome reception, he highlighted that it was the time for ’honest self-reflection’ across the industry. Nick further reflected that whilst unfortunate, change may only come out of this appalling tragedy, as there are ‘lessons to be learned and good sense is at last emerging’.
The ABCB is working closely with the UK authorities and its Inter-jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee counterparts on topics relevant to fire safety in high rise buildings.
